Small space, big style: furnishing a studio apartment

Studio living is a design brief: every piece has to earn its place. These are the rules we follow when we style a small space.

1. Choose one hero

A single statement piece — a sculptural armchair, a bold lamp — gives the room a focus. Everything else can be quiet. The Lounge Armchair in terracotta is a favourite.

2. Go up, not out

Tall shelving draws the eye upward and stores twice as much as a sideboard. Keep the top third empty.

3. Light in layers

Overhead light flattens a room. Add a table lamp, a floor lamp and a candle and the same room feels twice as large at night.

4. Stack and fold

Chairs that stack (like our Studio Stool) and tables that fold mean you can host six people and still have floor space on a Tuesday.

5. Edit relentlessly

If it does not fit, it goes. Small spaces punish clutter faster than large ones.
